A Smarter Way to Build—But It’s Not for Everyone
Our hybrid DIY pool construction program gives homeowners more control, but it works best when the fit is right.
This program is ideal for those who want to be hands-on and save money—without risking structural mistakes or permit headaches. But it’s not the best path for everyone. Here’s how to tell if our hybrid model is a good match for you:
- Good Fit
- Want to be involved in the building process without managing every technical detail.
- Are comfortable paying the subcontractors directly.
- Are looking for a more affordable path to a custom pool, without sacrificing structural quality
- Bad Fit
Prefer a fully turn-key pool construction experience with no involvement.
Don’t have the time or desire to coordinate any part of the project.
Expect a warranty on parts of the pool Duplessis Builders doesn’t build or control
If you’re looking for a way to save on your pool without sacrificing quality or confidence, our hybrid program could be the perfect fit. Let’s build it together—the smart way.
DIY Pool Building FAQs
Considering a DIY Pool? Here Are Questions You Might Be Asking:
Answers to your most common questions about building a new pool in Louisiana with Duplessis Builders
Can I build my own pool without hiring a pool builder?
Yes, you can act as your own general contractor. However, you’ll be responsible for managing permits, inspections, contractor hiring, and ensuring the structural integrity of your pool—areas where mistakes can be costly.
How Many Pools Has Duplessis Builders Designed and Built?
Duplessis Builders has built thousands of pools, including remodeling projects, in Louisiana. With decades of experience, we’ve created custom pools that fit a variety of styles, preferences, and budgets, for homeowners across the state.
Is there a warranty if I build my own pool?
Typically NO. Most fully DIY pools have no structural warranty unless a licensed builder oversees key construction phases. Duplessis Builder’s Hybrid Program offers a lifetime structural shell warranty because we manage the critical phases.
How much money can I save by building my own pool?
Savings can vary, but homeowners typically save 10%–13% compared to a full turnkey project. However, savings depend heavily on your ability to manage contractors, avoid mistakes, and secure fair pricing on materials and labor.
What parts of a pool build are the most critical to get right?
Excavation, steel/rebar installation, shotcrete (or gunite) application, and interior finishing are the most critical phases. Any errors here can cause major structural issues later—and void your warranty eligibility.
How do I get a pool permit if I build my own pool?
You’ll apply for a pool permit as the “owner-builder.” This means you’re legally responsible for ensuring the construction complies with local codes, inspections, and engineering requirements.
How long does a DIY pool project usually take?
Owner-built pools often take 6–12 months to complete, depending on your project management skills, contractor availability, and how quickly you can pass inspections without an licensed pool builder.
What are the risks of building my own pool?
Risks include project delays, unexpected costs, inspection failures, poor craftsmanship, and structural failures over time. Without proper planning and expertise, a DIY pool can end up costing more than hiring a professional.
Can I use a hybrid approach where a builder does some work and I finish it?
Yes! That’s exactly what Duplessis Builder’s Hybrid DIY Program is designed for. We handle the five critical construction phases, ensuring quality and warranty protection.
